I’ve always been a bit fascinated by creative romantic partnerships and the sixties era was rife with them. Riding the wave of new music that the 60’s brought flooding in, were some of the coolest in artistic couples. It was France that brought together one of the most interesting of those in Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg. Serge, married Jane when he was 40 and she 21 and they stayed together 13 years creating art in music and film.
Jane was one of those cool swinging 60’s chicks, beautiful, fashionable and living life to the fullest. She even inspired Hermes to create what turned out to be one of the most sought after handbags in history for her; the Birkin bag. Even though he was famously difficult, I can see why she was drawn to him – he was just so cool.
Jane was a young model and actress (Blowup, Slogan) when she met France’s great chanteur. Jane provided sexy accompaniment on “J’Taime moi non plus” Serge’s song that caused quite a stir in an era where boundaries were being stretched and walls kicked down. They had one daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, an actress and singer, who has for many years lived in France with Yvan Attal (actor, director). Serge, a legend in France, passed away in 1991 and Jane is still acting and singing. Jane’s official website is here and Charlotte’s is here.
